U.S.-Kyrgyz Statement on Second Comprehensive Policy Dialogue
March 18, 2008 - The United States and the Kyrgyz Republic today held the second meeting of the U.S.-Kyrgyz Comprehensive Policy Dialogue, continuing a process undertaken in September 2007 to enhance the bilateral relationship through periodic senior level consultation on the full range of issues of importance to both countries.
The United States and the Kyrgyz Republic agreed that the recently signed Millennium Challenge Account Threshold Program Agreement offers great potential for reform of the judicial and law enforcement sectors and progress in the struggle against corruption. The Program’s promotion of the rule of law will also contribute to the development of democracy and respect for human rights. Both sides are committed to vigorous implementation of the Program.
Improvements in the rule of law will also promote a more attractive business environment, and both the United States and Kyrgyzstan are committed to further economic reform to promote a closer economic partnership. The two sides agreed to work together to maximize the potential benefits of the Central Asia-South Asia Regional Electricity Market.
The United States and the Kyrgyz Republic expressed their continued commitment to the struggle against such transnational threats as international terrorism and narcotics trafficking. In addition to ongoing cooperation and assistance, $15 million of new resources will support efforts to increase stability in the region through training of law enforcement personnel, provision of new equipment, and renovation of facilities.
