Democracy Commission

The Public Affairs Section (PA) of the U.S. Embassy administers Small Grants Program of the U.S. Embassy Democracy Commission, which gives small grants to indigenous non-commercial, non-governmental associations, and independent media to carry out non-partisan projects to advance democracy and democratic values in Kyrgyzstan, to support the development a civil society based on rule of law and respect for human rights.

The Democracy Commission at the Embassy of the United States of America was established in 1994 to enable the Embassy to support the local democratic initiatives. The Commission may award grants up to $24,000 for non-governmental and non-commercial projects that support initiatives that promote civil society, free flow of information (including support for independent media); transparency in government; public education and advocacy; association building; rule of law and legal reform; conflict resolution; human rights; civic education; market economy; and ethnic, minority, and women's equality, get-out-the-vote or other election issues; anti-trafficking and anti-corruption awareness campaign and training. The Democracy Commission meets once every 3-4 months to review proposals, which meet minimum criteria.
