 | U.S. Embassy Supported the Construction of the Kyrgyz Special Forces Compound On October 23, Ambassador Tatiana Gfoeller and Deputy Minister of Defense of the Kyrgyz Republic Askarbek Japarov participated in the opening of a new compound for Kyrgyz Special Forces ("Scorpions" Battalion). This $9 million compound provides the officers, sergeants, and soldiers of the Battalion with modern living and working conditions. “This Special Forces Compound, which we are opening today, represents our ongoing commitment to the security of an independent Kyrgyzstan,” Ambassador Gfoeller said at the opening ceremony. ambassador's remarks |
 | Ambassador Speaks at Kyrgyz-U.S. Business Seminar On October 15, Ambassador Tatiana C. Gfoeller spoke at the Manas Transit Center's Kyrgyz-U.S. Business Seminar. The seminar focused on procedures for bidding on and obtaining contracts with the U.S. government, including contracts with the Transit Center at Manas and with the U.S. military in Afghanistan. ambassador's remarks |
| U.S. Embassy Constructs Surgical Wing at Military Hospital On October 14, Ambassador Tatiana C. Gfoeller cut the ribbon on a new surgical wing at the Military Hospital in Besh-Kungei, Kyrgyzstan. The U.S. Embassy's Office of Military Cooperation built the new surgical wing, which will provide medical care to Kyrgyzstan's service members and their families, at a cost of $2 million. The Office of Military Cooperation plans to continue its support of the hospital by donating equipment and expanding training opportunities for the hospital's staff. ambassador's remarks |

 General Hostage, Ambassador Gfoeller, and First Deputy Governor Toktobolotov cut a ribbon for Eureca school. 09/01/09 | America Funds Renovation of Rural School On September 1, 2009, the first official day of school in Kyrgyzstan, Ambassador Gfoeller, officials from CENTCOM and the Transit Center participated in the opening of new school in Birdik village. On April 14, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the renovation project the school. The project was developed by the Embassy’s Office of Military Cooperation, funded by CENTCOM, and implemented in cooperation with Manas Air Transit Center. Previously older children had to make a rugged three hour hike to a neighboring village to attend school, while younger children were effectively cut off from educational opportunities. ambassador's remarks |
 | Ambassador Tours Kumtor Gold Mine On August 24 – 25, Ambassador Gfoeller visited the majority Canadian-owned Kumtor gold mine, which is the largest foreign investor in Kyrgyzstan. The mine uses U.S.-made large earth-moving equipment, including several 150-ton Caterpillar dump trucks. |

| Pilot Schools of American English in Kyrgyzstan August 20, 2009. Ambassador Tatiana C. Gfoeller announced the opening of a new project, entitled “Pilot Schools of American English in Kyrgyzstan”. These seven American schools, one in each region of Kyrgyzstan, will receive new textbooks with American English and culture, and a series of trainings for their teachers and directors. This is the first such project in Central Asia.  | Ambassador Gfoeller Welcomes 56 New Peace Corps Volunteers in the Kyrgyz Republic On June 10, Ambassador Tatiana C. Gfoeller presided over the swearing-in of Peace Corps Volunteers in a ceremony in the city of Kant. They will serve as English language teachers, health promoters, and with non-government organizations around the country. The Ambassador commended the Volunteers for their commitment to serve in local communities and encouraged them to use President Obama’s Cairo speech to the Muslim world as an opportunity for further dialogue and action with Kyrgyz partners. “I believe Kyrgyzstan has the potential to be a true bridge between peoples, in the tradition of the great Silk Road”, the Ambassador said.  | Groundbreaking Ceremony at Birdik Village On April 14, Ambassador gave remarks at a groundbreaking ceremony for a school renovation project in Birdik village. The $700,000 project was developed by the Embassy’s Office of Military Cooperation (OMC), funded by CENTCOM, and is being implemented in cooperation with Manas Air Base. | "Doing Business with the USA" Seminars in Bishkek and Osh The U.S. Embassy invitated Kyrgyz businesspeople to attend a "Doing Business with the USA" seminar in Bishkek on March 26, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency and in Osh on March 27, 2009 at the Osh Regional Library. The seminars are designed to provide insights to Kyrgyz companies regarding how to conduct business with U.S. partners. |
| A group of young Kyrgyz basketball players visited the United States On March 21, a group of seven young basketball players and two coaches from Kyrgyzstan traveled to the United States on a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The delegation was made up of survivors of the August 24, 2008, airplane crash, which killed ten of the seventeen members of their squad. |
The group spent ten days in the United States participating in basketball training, visiting local schools, and attending a Washington Wizards game. Their program included a meeting with NBA legend Sam Perkins and a visit to the NCAA Hall of Fame. At the Press Conference at the Kyrgyz National News agency Kabar Ambassador Tatiana Gfoeller said, “We all hope that it will be a positive and memorable experience for the team and a symbol of the friendship between the American and the Kyrgyz peoples.” ambassador's remarks
Local Government Best Practices Conference January 16, 2009. Ambassador Tatiana C. Gfoeller, Project COP Claire Romanik, Kyrgyz Parliament member Saymbekov, Director of the National Agency on Local-Self-Government Affairs Mamasadyk Bakirov, Kyrgyz central and local government officials attended the Local Government Best Practices Conference at the Ala-Archa Government Residence. Both Kyrgyz and international participants shared their experiences in the area of decentralization and local self-government. At the opening of the conference U.S. Ambassador Tatiana C. Handover ceremony at the Ministry of Health November 26, 2008. Ambassador Gfoeller handed over 4,000 subclavian catheters for children and 40,000 laboratory test systems for HIV screening to the Kyrgyz Ministry of Health. The U.S. Government has provided $439,000 to purchase urgently-needed medical equipment and supplies and to supported an assessment of infection prevention and control and training activities for healthcare professionals around the country. ambassador's remarks
Handover of CENTCOM Humanitarian Supplies to the Ministry of Emergency Situations at Manas Air Base November 24, 2008. Ambassador Gfoeller handed meals and sleeping bags valued at $250,000 provided by the U.S. Department of Defense through the U.S. Embassy's Office of Military Cooperation to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic for further distribution to where it is most needed. | U.S. Embassy Hosts Election Events On November 5, U.S. Embassy Bishkek hosted election events at the Ambassador's residence and four American Corners and Centers over the country. Numerous Kyrgyz officials, politicians, NGO leaders, journalists, U.S. Government program alumni, and students attended to watch historic elections and Barack Obama's victory. Borbiev | Vehicles to the Traffic Police On November 4th, 2008, Ambassador Tatiana Gfoeller presented five new police vehicles and equipment, valued at $126,000, to the Traffic Police at a newly-refurbished Traffic Police Duty Office. The gift from the American people is intended to strengthen the Kyrgyz police, enhance their investigative capabilities, fight corruption, and bring reform to the Kyrgyz law enforcement community. Major General Moldomusa Kongantiev, Minister of the Interior, and Colonel Bolotbek Borbiev, Director of the Main Department for Traffic Safety, accepted the assistance on behalf of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic. |
Student Loan Progam in Kyrgyzstan On November4, 2008, Ambassador Gfoeller announced new Student Loan Program at the press conference in the Kyrgyz National Information Agency Kabar. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Government in cooperation with local partners, Companion Microcredit Company and Kyrgyz Credit and Investment Bank and will help young Kyrgyz citizen to get access to vacational and higher education. ambassador's remarks (rus)
