Tatiana C. Gfoeller
Tatiana C. Gfoeller was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic on August 22, 2008.
A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Ambassador Tatiana C. Gfoeller joined the Department of State in 1984. She most recently served as Consul General in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Her previous foreign postings have included: Vice-Consul/Political Officer in Warsaw, Poland; Political Officer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Political Counselor in Manama, Bahrain; Political Officer in Moscow, USSR; Officer of the NATO International Staff in Brussels, Belgium; Deputy Political-Internal Counselor in Moscow, Russia; Deputy Chief of Mission in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan; and Deputy Principal Officer in St. Petersburg, Russia. She also served as the Director of Multilateral Affairs in the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.
Ms. Gfoeller was awarded the Rusk Fellowship in 2000, and taught Masters Degree classes in Political Science at Georgetown University. During that time, she wrote "United by the Caspian," a book on U.S. foreign policy interests in the Caspian Basin. She has been awarded the State Department’s Superior Honor Award four times, the Meritorious Honor Award twice, the Sinclaire Language Award once, and a Certificate of Recognition from the Secretary of Defense for Service during the Cold War.
Ambassador Gfoeller completed the standard Arabic course at the Foreign Service Institute in Arlington, Virginia and the advanced Arabic course at the State Department’s Institute in Tunis, Tunisia. She speaks Russian, French, Polish, Italian, Spanish, and Arabic. She is a member of numerous foreign affairs organizations, including the Council of Foreign Relations.
Ambassador Gfoeller has a Bachelor’s of Science and a Master’s of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. She also earned a Certificate of International Law Studies from the University of Florence, Italy. She is married and has one son.
